Family Guy, The Daily Show, and Political Awareness

I don’t know why but I am still consistently surprised by the number of young people who think that they are politically minded but truly have no idea of the reality of situations. Recently I was in an English class and the professor of the class asked what I am reading for my report.  When I told him In My Time by Dick Cheney, I had multiple students who approached me and asked me if I liked Dick Cheney.  Interested in their responses I said “Yes. He has a great set of leadership skills, has been effective in developing himself as such, and comes from a relatively modest background.” The students then exposed themselves relatively quickly stating that they like politics but they just can’t watch anything on Fox, finishing the sentence by saying “except Family Guy.”  The two students then began talking to one another and I sat back and listened, slowly shaking my head.  These two students continued to say that they really enjoy Jon Stewart, to which I finally interrupted and said “Jon Stewart has no idea what he is talking about 95% of the time” to which one of the students replied “It’s just a comedy show.” I smiled at him and said “His audience tends to forget that and so does he.” The point is that shows like Family Guy and The Daily Show have fostered this undeserved sense of political involvement.  These guys thing that they know what is going on in the political world based on their interpretation of what a fat man wearing green pants and a white polo says on television. Stewart’s website has a forum that is full of people who believe that their opinions on politics are founded and justified by the same television show that hosts the forum. It is important that steps are taken to make this generation aware of the reality of these issues and put them in a position to become more adept the political climate beyond what a 2o minute cartoon produced by a guy who can’t develop an original idea to save his life (for those who haven’t caught on, Family Guy is an uneducated knockoff of South Park ). I have some ideas for how we can make this approach and how we can start spreading the world and getting people engaged in discussion about political ideology but it is nearly impossible to start the conversation on a meaningful plain.  Television shows are swaying people’s opinions while giving some form of entertainment.

If not NOW, then WHEN….hollow promises by Conservative Leaders …or, will this be a time of action?

On any day, as a Talk Show Host, I will receive about 300 emails from listeners, public relations firms, Candidates, or advertisers. So, when I received the email below from a young, Conservative UNCW student, it was not something out of the ordinary. Listeners often will send on their comments on the show or topics [...]

The Moynihan Report (1965)

The Negro Family: The Case For National Action Office of Policy Planning and Research United States Department of Labor March 1965 Chapter II. The Negro American Family At the heart of the deterioration of the fabric of Negro society is the deterioration of the Negro family. It is the fundamental source of the weakness of the Negro community at the present time. There is probably no single fact of Negro American life so little understood by whites. The Negro situation is commonly perceived by whites in terms of the visible manifestation of discrimination and poverty, in part because Negro protest is directed against such obstacles, and in part, no doubt, because these are facts which involve the actions and attitudes of the white community as well. It is more difficult, however, for whites to perceive the effect that three centuries of exploitation have had on the fabric of Negro society itself. Here the consequences of the historic injustices done to Negro Americans are silent and hidden from view. But here is where the true injury has occurred: unless this damage is repaired, all the effort to end discrimination and poverty and injustice will come to little. To read more click here . A RIVER RUNS THROUGH IT

As we approach the tenth anniversary of 9/11, we are painfully aware that there are two opposing forces in the world, Good and Evil, and they are in a constant struggle with each other. We can’t see or touch these forces. We can only see and feel the results of their conflict and the impact [...]
