Living in the “Liberal” fog…a letter from a ‘drive by’ liberal listener….

Dear Mr. Wright,

I rarely listen to talk radio but I happened to hear you speaking today as I was driving across town on an errand (thanks to scan mode on the radio). It was interesting to hear your perspective on current issues because they are somewhat different from mine. Like you, I am not thrilled with Obama’s performance as our president. But your reasons for opposing Obama, at least as you presented them on the radio today, surprised me. You seem to believe that Obama is a communist or has socialistic sympathies. As someone who truly is a socialist, I am not sure how that our interpretations of Obama could be more antithetical from one another’s. Indeed, it appears to me that everything Obama has done since entering office has been in the service of capitalism and the masters of capitalism. The health care plan, aside from offering people the opportunity to shop for insurance across state lines and not be dropped from their health insurance plans for getting sick, turned out to be little more than a boon for the insurance industry. Corporate and individual tax burdens across all income levels are at their lowest levels since the 1950s. In 2009 and 2010 corporate profits were at record levels. Forty percent of the stimulus package was in the form of tax relief. Military spending has increased each year under Obama and we are involved in three counter-productive, wasteful wars.

I can see why a person with my political leanings would be disappointed with Obama’s policies and actions thus far but it is impossible for me to understand why a political conservative would not cheer for him (beliefs are distorting lenses and filters, I suppose). From where I stand, Obama’s political actions reflect strongly conservative tendencies (e.g., stacking the deck for the investor class and against the working class. As a socialist, of course, I root for the workers.). It breaks my heart that Obama does not better resemble the person that you portray him as and, I admit, that as I listened to you I let myself fantasize that the real Obama was the man you were describing. For a moment I felt a sense of delight because I believe such a person would be a great blessing to our nation. May it be so. May God see fit to lead such a person to office.

I hope you are well and happy and that my perspective is of benefit to you.

Sincerely,

Julian

  1. Julian, it seems that you Curtis and I are on the same page, to an extent. You see, we are all “rooting for the working class”. I don’t know about you, but Curtis and I are part of the “working class”. As a matter of fact, we and other Conservatives are working hard to insure that all Americans are part of the “working class”. However this nation has a finite supply of people, so in our efforts to expand the “working class” we must draw from the “loafing class”. Currently the “loafing class” spends most of their time playing games on cell phones, Blackberries and I-phones often subsidized by the ‘working class’. Now, to get the “loafing class” off their toys, out of their beds and into the work force we need employment opportunities. Ergo, there exists a distinct need for an “investor class”.
Curtis and I have such an intense desire to defend the “working class” that we, and this may be difficult for you to understand, believe that the “working class” should be able to keep the fruits of their labor (also known as wages). Perhaps the difference between us is that you believe the “working class” and the “loafing class” can coexist if we eliminate the “investor class”. If that is so, I suggest you spend more time on cross town errands, preferably between the hours of 6 to 10 in the morning. – Your “working class” friend, Kevin
